Updated Grading Practices at San Gorgonio Middle School

Overview:

At San Gorgonio Middle School, we are committed to providing a learning environment that supports student success and clear communication of academic progress. This year, we are transitioning from a standards-based gradebook to a traditional points-based gradebook in Aeries. See below for an overview of expected changes/adjustments.

Points-Based Gradebook:

Moving to a points-based gradebook allows us to assign point values to assignments, quizzes, tests, and other assessments. This system provides a straightforward way for students and parents to understand how grades are calculated and how progress is tracked throughout the school year. Grades will translate from a percentage to a letter grade.

Grade Marks: No plus or minus system

A: (90 - 100 %)

B: (80 - 89%)

C: (70 - 79 %)

D: (60 - 69 %)

F: (Below 60 %)

Standards-Based Teaching and Learning:

Although we are moving to a points-based gradebook, we continue to embrace the philosophy of standards-based instruction. Our teaching practices remain focused on helping students master specific skills and standards. This ensures that learning experiences are meaningful and aligned with educational goals.

Benefits:

  • Transparency: Students and parents can see exactly how each assignment contributes to the overall grade.
  • Consistency: The traditional points-based system will bring consistency in how grades are reported and understood across different subjects and grade levels. (Including transition to HighSchool)

How It Works

  • Assignments and Assessments: Each assignment and assessment will have a point value assigned. These points will contribute to the overall grade in the class.
  • Grade Calculation: Grades will be calculated based on an average within the weights of assessments and assignments. Grades will reset at the end of the semester.
    • Grade Weights:
  • Assessments: 70%
    • Assessments may be tests, quizzes, projects, presentations, etc. Assessments should always measure performance on skills and standards.
  • Assignments: 30%
    • Assignments may be classwork or homework or class activity. This may be some sort of practice item to develop the skill and standards
